Promiscuous Plasmid Implicated in a CRE Outbreak

In Virginia, a nosocomial outbreak of infections caused by carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae was linked to wide horizontal transmission of a plasmid. The recent emergence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) has caused great concern worldwide. Perhaps even more worrisome is the report of an outbreak of plasmid-mediated CRE infections. When two cases of infection caused by two different strains of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella were identified in August 2007 at the University of Virginia Health System, the institution began screening all extended-spectrum β-lactamase–producing Enterobacteriaceae for carbapenemase production. During the next 8 months, 16 CRE strains representing 4 genera and 6 species were identified from 14

Folliculitis – Cure Your Folliculitis

Folliculitis describes an infection of one or several hair follicles which can occur anywhere around the body though is most common on the neck, axilla and groin regions. This will result in a red rash across the skin, pimples around the hair follicle, crustiness or itchiness. Usually this will occur as a result of the staphylococcus aureus bacteria which is the same bacteria that causes the MRSA ‘hospital bug’ which infects the follicle usually after it has been damaged. This damage in turn can be caused by friction caused by clothing, insect bites, blockages, incorrect shaving, tight braids that pull
